It is either some things never change, or they change to stay the same. The rumblings of over Dr Jim Yong Kim’s appointment to the World Bank as its president has seen the United States selective use of its democratic principles questioned yet again. As the highest votes-holding nation in the organization, that has dictated its choice of presidents since inception the United States was expected on this occasion as a start, to relinquish her monopoly.
Front runners by merit appear to be the duo of Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonji-Iweala and Colombia’s Jose Antonio Ocampo. The former a one time executive of the institution and the latter his country’s ex finance minister, and both were understandably scathing of the America’s decision to prop Dr Kim, a medical expert into a chair more befitting of a seasoned economist. Hardly the first time a professional from the non-banking or economics sector served… Continue reading →

The International Monetary Fund is a financial institution which was set up after the Second World War, during the Bretton Woods Agreement in 1945. According to historical sources, the financial institution was set up to oversee global economic policies of its member states. The IMF does this by supporting its members when providing financial help or advice pertaining to macroeconomic issues. Even so, the IMF’s standing in the world and high level of influence on the global economy has generated much criticism when skeptics raise questions about the actual intentions of the financial institution.
One theory that was formulated about the IMF was that it was created to attain control over poor countries. This is justified by the idea of neocolonialism. When international economic arrangements are abused, first world countries will find that it is easier to have a certain level of influence over poorer countries or former colonies. While… Continue reading →

News about the financial situation in Greece has dominated headlines all over the world. The burning question on everyone’s mind right now is whether or not the Greek parliament wants to take on the aid offered by the IMF or declare nation-wide bankruptcy. Verdict aside, what should really be on your mind right now is how all of this began in the first place. Let me do the honors by quoting a famous, or should I say infamous controversial figure.
“The Greek people are anarchic and difficult to tame. For this reason we must strike deep into their cultural roots: Perhaps then we can force them to conform. I mean, of course, to strike at their language, their religion, their cultural and historical reserves, so that we can neutralize their ability to develop, to distinguish themselves, or to prevail; thereby removing them as an obstacle to our strategically vital plans… Continue reading →

What is the New World Order? Well historically, the term was caught on after a global address by George Herbert Walker Bush after the Cold Era. In a generic sense, the term refers to the period of significant historical change which will bring about global cooperation and a balance of powers between nation states. This could be propagated by advocating peace and diplomacy in the world.
However so, multiple interpretations of the New World Order started to take precedence during the 20th Century. One of the more formidable interpretations of the term would be the establishment of an authoritarian one-world government. Honestly, I don’t blame the initiators of this idea because the signs of its relevance are very prevalent. The formation of institutions such as NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), IMF (International Monetary Fund), WTO (World Trade Organization) and WB (World Bank) has been a subject of scrutiny up till… Continue reading →
