Posted on by skeptik@l

Does heart disease run in your family? Do you fear for your health in the future? Here’s some useful advice: surround yourself with happy and cheerful people. With some luck, it might be your only ticket to a long life. US experts tell us that being positive “may protect against heart problems.”

What has the heart got to do with being happy? Well BBC reports that when an individual is more happy and optimistic, he has a smaller chance of attaining heart related illnesses and stroke. Psychological Bulletin confirms that the Harvard School of Public Health has analysed more that two hundred studies, rendering this information to be factual.

Even though different people have different immune systems, scientists have reasons to believe that by having a positive outlook of life, one can reduce the risks of high blood pressure and high cholesterol by a significant amount. Furthermore, earlier studies have… Continue reading →

To Judge or Not to Judge?

Posted on by skeptik@l

Impartiality is a very difficult trait to find in a person. The lack of fair and just people precisely justifies why most people respect court judges. Without the validity of a fair and unprejudiced court session during any single court case, judicial systems everywhere will most definitely be under chaos. The judges on the other hand have the responsibility of upholding their honour. This obviously means that when there is any hint of discrimination, the judge should be deemed inadequate.

If there is anything a judge shouldn’t be, it is a racist. Recently, the incident about Judge Richard Cebull’s racist email captured the attention of the media. Judge Richard Cebull, the chief judge for the district of Montana has allegedly forwarded an email about the conception of President Barack Obama. According to Time, “What do you do with a federal judge who approvingly forwarded an e-mail “joke” suggesting that President… Continue reading →

Apartheid Today

Posted on by skeptik@l

Bigotry and racial prejudice is still pretty rampant in the 21st century today. It is probable to assume that uncivilized acts and barbarism was a thing of the past, now that Man is a much more evolved species. Apartheid or “apartness” is a great example of racial prejudice and segregation which occurred in South Africa from 1948 to 1994. It was only until Nelson Mandela came into power that the crime of apartheid in South Africa came to a halt. However, apartheid is still a big problem today, in another part of the world.

In February or March, University campuses all over the world usher Israeli Apartheid Week. The aim of Israeli Apartheid Week is to “to educate people about the nature of Israel as an apartheid system and to build Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaigns as part of a growing global BDS movement.” The movement started in Canada, Toronto in… Continue reading →

Sir Isaac Newton’s Spiritual Side

Posted on by skeptik@l

We recognize him as the man who discovered gravity. Everyone knows the story of Sir Isaac Newton’s discovery of gravity, defined as the law of universal gravitation. This happened when an apple supposedly dropped on his head while he was seated under a tree. Almost as if a scientific enlightenment occurred when the apple dropped from the tree, Newton was compelled to study the same force that made the apple drop, the same force that stops the Moon from crashing towards Earth. Newton was “considered by many to be the greatest and most influential scientist who ever lived.” It would most definitely be a surprise to find out that Newton actually had a deep interest in occultism and mysticism.

The Daily Mail Reports,

“’Today, we tend to make a distinction between science and faith, but to Newton it was all part of the same world,’ said Milka Levy-Rubin.

‘He believed… Continue reading →

Atheists And Their Religion

Posted on by Austin Osoroh

To the atheists,  the reality and notions of God and religion which is a reference cornerstone of their values, have been extremely generous from an interesting perspective. Whether in rebellion, logic or from evidential standpoint most of their atheistic assertions or relevance are actually threatened by the absence of God or religion; that very same position they promote. The strongest proof of this is the fact that almost every atheist in denying or discounting the value of God and religion, is involuntarily trying to invent a caricature of those very same in order to fill the void seemingly created by their positions. Any dedicated and diligent probe of their  positions unfailingly  reveals the ‘necessity’ of God and religion to exist, even as a notion, for the atheist to have an identity.

Take as  a belated representation, the need for the existence of crime for there to be any relevance… Continue reading →

Was Socrates A Prophet?

Posted on by skeptik@l

History crowned Socrates as one of the wisest men to have existed in Ancient Greece. Commonly known as one of the founders of Western philosophy, Socrates attained a legendary status for his influence in the field of ethics. The life and teachings of Socrates had been recorded only by his students and contemporaries, mainly Plato, Xenophon and Aristophanes. Socrates’ teachings were so radical and unconventional in nature, he was thought to be a prophet during his life time.

Comparisons have been made between Socrates and other iconic religious figures in history such as Jesus Christ and Muhammad. These similarities included teachings which went against contemporary religion. Also, they took the needs of their fellowmen sincerely. Let’s not forget the stark similarity which depicted each individual’s suffering and torture from those who follow the mainstream religious ideology of those times. They suffered horribly for believing in atypical ideas which they stood… Continue reading →

Aliens In the Bible

Posted on by skeptik@l

The trouble with history is that well, you can never really assess the reliability of historical sources. Not unless you were there at the time the incident took place. One of the few techniques to ensure the reliability of the given source is to compare it with a few other sources. However so, even that is deemed to be insufficient by some skeptics. Often, this leads to the inability to come up with a common consensus regarding what actually took place during that particular event in the past.  For many years, the question about the bible’s content has been posed to Christians.

According to those few, the bible consists of content about aliens and all those UFO sightings claimed by people over the course of history were in fact angel sightings. The Alien Agenda is a term that is commonly brought up to describe angels or “fallen angels” to be more… Continue reading →

Rosemary’s Baby: the Devil

Posted on by skeptik@l

Is religion dead? Recent events in the world today seem to suggest so. Hedonism is so rampant in 21st Century today; we can’t help but perform daily activities which bring pleasure and satisfaction only to us. It feels as though the whole outlook of the 21st Century is defined by selfish ideals. Whatever happened to cultured morals, spirituality and selflessness? Why is society today so hell-bent on progress, progress and personal progress? The religious devotees out there have an answer: The decline of religion can only equate to the rising influence of the Devil. In 1968, Roman Polanski produced Rosemary’s Baby a chilling, critically acclaimed movie.

Rosemary’s Baby is a 1967 horror novel by Ira Levin. It attained best-seller status and was later made into a film. It was written and directed by Roman Rolanski. The movie tells an unsettling story about a young Rosemary Woodhouse who moves into a… Continue reading →

Occupy Wall Street effects

Posted on by skeptik@l

The credibility of financial institutions was tested recently. Thanks to the Occupy Wall Street movement, financial institutions such as Goldman Sachs had been undermined by students in Ivy League universities.

The plan to recruit students from top university, Harvard University, was recently cancelled due to the reaction of angry student protesters during a similar recruiting event in November this year. According to Bloomberg News, 25 students from Harvard tried to enter a Goldman Sachs recruiting event on the 28th of November. However so, they were not allowed to enter due to improper dressing and the failure to produce their resumes. Hence, they stood outside the room of the recruiting event and chanted slogans in protest. Due to this, the recruitment event that was supposed to occur on the 8th of December was cancelled.

Apparently, this was not only the case for Harvard University. Students from other Ivy League universities such… Continue reading →

Michael Sandel’s political philosophy

Posted on by skeptik@l

What is the right thing to do? This is the recurring question which philosopher and famous Harvard professor Michael Sandel asks his students on multiple occasions. In the rather dreary world we live in today, Sandel provides fresh perspectives on the notions of justice; at the same time providing an insight on how political philosophy fits into our everyday lives.

Sandel was recognized for teaching the famous “Justice” course at Harvard for nearly twenty years. More than 15 000 students have been known to have taken the course and this makes it possibly one of the most highly attended courses in the Harvard’s history. In 2005, the course was recorded and offered online for students through the Harvard Extension School.

Sandel’s views on justice are indeed compelling in nature. He invokes thought provoking perspectives for his students to dwell on. Sandel does this by explaining the different theories of justice… Continue reading →
