Virus As A Source Of Electricity

Posted on by skeptik@l

Today, convenience is seen as an important priority for us consumers. This is precisely why scientists and inventors strive to create new technologies to ensure that comfort can be attained with convenience. All throughout history, we see technological innovation – brilliant in form, making the life we lead today better than the ones in the past. Of course, all of this can only be attributed to time and how precious it is. Why hand-wash your clothes when you have the convenience of the washing machine, why walk to school when you can travel by bus or train. These inventions are truly remarkable in nature and they have helped the progression of mankind in so many ways. The past is so different from the present state and one can only wonder what our world would be like in the future. One thing could be a possibility: viruses could possibly play a… Continue reading →

Alien Space Craft Beside The Sun

Posted on by skeptik@l

We are not alone, maybe. Earlier this month, the Solar and Heliosperic Observatory (SOHO), a special spacecraft which was created by a European industrial consortium, noted a particular contradiction between similar images released by both NASA and SOHO respectively. SOHO is a collaborative project between the European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA. Even though SOHO started out with the intention of carrying out a two year mission, it has continued its operation ever since it started in 1996.

Earlier this month, SOHO has captured an image of what appears to be a big UFO spacecraft located very near the Sun. Apparently, this is the third time in 2012 that SOHO has captured similar objects near the Sun. The initiation of SOHO during the 1990s was to study the Sun. Apart from that, it has also been successful in detecting comets near the Sun.

Apart from studying the Sun, SOHO has… Continue reading →

Missile Installation for Olympic Games

Posted on by skeptik@l

Paranoia is taken to a whole new level as we see individuals, corporations and governments take drastic measures to ensure safety in a post-9/11 world.  Parachute escape shoots, violation of individual privacy and rooftop missiles. Yes, rooftop missiles, you read that correctly.

Recently, government officials have expressed the intention of installing “high velocity rockets aimed at preventing an airborne terrorist attack” during the next Olympic Games in London. This initiation is only applicable to the housing developments located near the Olympic Park. According to the Guardian, the Bow Quarter complex which houses approximately 700 apartments is one of the first housing developments picked by military officials.

The residents of those homes were informed by the officials working for the Ministry of Defence. For security exercise reasons, trial runs will be executed to test out the missile units. Dummy rockets will be utilised during the trial phase which starts this Wednesday.… Continue reading →

The Negative Impact of Economic Growth

Posted on by skeptik@l

Recent global recessions have led to a race between competing economies. The competition gets more challenging as a bottleneck phenomenon occurs, ousting the weaker economies to make way for the stronger ones. This economic frenzy occurs as economies worldwide struggle to attain stronghold in dire attempts to revive their economies. Sadly, like everything else, economic growth comes with a price.

The price we have to pay this time; is a pretty big one. It affects our present and future. It could even affect the existence of our species. It is perhaps the biggest reality we try to avoid – global warming. A thought provoking article was released by Science Daily. It informs us that new research ascertains that one of the most obvious ways to slow down global warming is in fact to decrease the rate at which the global economy is growing – either that or possibly revamp the… Continue reading →

Humans & Ants Are Surprisingly Similar

Posted on by skeptik@l

Everyday is a routine. We wake up; scurry about our individual lives; to work, school or the gym. This busy cycle of life and routine help make up any human society. Interestingly, ants do the same. Both human and ant societies share the same sort of opportunities to be the best that they can be.  Also, both species may disregard the need to recognize every single individual. Moreover, a group has no problem whatsoever remaining unified despite the disregard for individuality.

A remarkable article released by Discovery showed that the rate at which human beings are growing indicates more similarities between human beings and ant colonies as opposed to our “closest animal kingdom relatives.” So is it really hard to believe that we are in fact more similar to ants than we are to chimpanzees? Mark Moffett, the author of the research seems to think so. Moffett believes that within… Continue reading →

Poultry’s Contribution to Climate Change

Posted on by skeptik@l

The Earth is dying. Natural resources are plummeting and as of now, it is uncertain what the future will hold for us all. It is pretty apparent that now, the shift to alternative sources of energy is place; albeit a slow and lengthy transition. Pretty soon, we will be less dependent on fossil fuels as we move towards renewable energy resources. However so, other methods could contribute to avoid natural disasters due to climate change. For instance, cutting down on meat or better, adopt a vegetarian diet.

Forbes has recently published an interesting article based on World Watch Magazine. According to co-author Robert Goodland, “The entire goal of today’s international climate objectives can be achieved by replacing just one-fourth of today’s least eco-friendly food products with better alternatives.” Goodland is also a former advisor to the World Bank Group.

In 2006, a report showed that approximately 18 percent of the… Continue reading →

Alien Encounters

Posted on by skeptik@l

Are we alone? This is probably one of the most frequently asked questions in our lifetime.  This is really a dichotomous question, it’s either you believe in it or you don’t.  Non-believers justify these encounters with madness and insanity but have never really explained why alien encounters, UFO sightings and alien abductions have been told and retold many times over the course of history. What do you believe?

Recently, the Daily Mail has provided an in depth article on the alien encounters of some of the believers. Their accounts were provided with drawings and pictures of what they could recall so as to supposedly validate the authenticity of the encounters.

One instance includes Cynthia’s personal encounter. According to Cynthia, she “got to meet numerous types of beings.” She started off by telling the Daily Mail that when she was in her thirties, her father revealed to her that she was… Continue reading →

Terrorist Acts Influenced By The FBI

Posted on by skeptik@l

Acts of desperation are pretty obvious when they’re laid out right in front of you. Thomas Jefferson once said “When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on.” Indeed, desperate people show qualities which are unmistakable. It’s something you can never miss. Whether these acts evoke sympathy or disgust really depend on the context of the situation.

Correspondingly, what would your take be on these acts of desperation? Recently, David K. Shipler wrote a compelling piece of article on the New York Times about the F.B.I being responsible for the instigation, planning, as well as the execution of terrorist plots. I’m sure your initial response would be one of disgust, trust me, it was mine too.

So here’s how Shipler claimed for it to have happened.  Undercover F.B.I agents or informers firstly put on a facade; they pretend to be terrorists. Most of… Continue reading →

More Compassion Found In Those Less Religious

Posted on by skeptik@l

“Compassion is sometimes the fatal capacity for feeling what it is like to live inside somebody else’s skin. It is the knowledge that there can never really be any peace and joy for me until there is peace and joy finally for you too.” – Frederick Beuchner.

One would expect religiosity to be a trigger or maybe even a fuel for compassion to thrive. It seems as though it is not. Ironically, science has proven that individuals who are assumed to be pious in nature are “less motivated by compassion than are non-believers”, Science Daily Reports.

According to three experiments, researchers found that compassion is a vital aspect of getting individuals who are not religiously inclined to be more generous. Rob Willer, a social psychologist from UC Berkeley states that   throughout the whole study, the level of emotional ties to another individual tells whether or not they will give aid… Continue reading →

Banks Versus Protesters

Posted on by skeptik@l

As if the world hasn’t already seen its share of injustice and inequity. In fact, those were the primary reasons for the start of revolutions such as the Arab Spring Movement and the Occupy Movement. The aim of the Occupy Movement is no longer foreign to most of the masses; to stop the 1% of the elite from further taking advantage of the 99% of the rest. So what happens when the banks start to form an alliance to “go against” the other 99%?

Max Abelson of the San Francisco Chronicle has apparently made it known that this might be going on right now, under our very noses. Abelson mentions that the major banks in the world are coming together with a common consensus and purpose in mind. That is solely to gather inside information about the Occupy protests and protesters. Most of the protest targets are JPMorgan Chase and… Continue reading →
